For lots of people, getting in front of the camera can be an awkward and vulnerable thing to do, so if you’re feeling nervous about having a photographer follow you around on your wedding day, it’s so normal and I get i! Booking yourself an engagement session is the perfect opportunity to get a feel for being photographed, you’ll get to know your photographer and bonus – you’ll get extra photos of you and your lover!

I recently shot this creative engagement session at one of my workshops in Dubbo and Brooklyn and Harry had never been photographed together before. And being a recently engaged couple, it was the perfect opportunity for them to get in front of the camera for the first time!

Here’s what Brooklyn had to say about their session:

“OMG we had so much fun and I cannot deal with how good these photos are! I don’t know why we didn’t get photos together sooner. Thanks so much!!”

Here’s why an engagement session is a good idea!

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT

Like anything, the more you do it the better you get at it. Exactly the same goes for having your photo taken; it can be a bit of a vulnerable experience to allow a stranger to photograph you, but it doesn’t have to be. Years ago when I first started taking photos, I hadn’t had many taken of myself so I didn’t fully understand how my clients felt on the other side of the camera. So I decided it was about time to put myself in their shoes and I instantly thought ‘I get it now.’ Over the years I have been photographed SO many times, and every time I do it makes me better at it, and it reminds me of how to make my clients feel as comfortable as possible.

Booking yourself an engagement session will help so much when it comes to your actual wedding day. You’ll understand more about how your photographer works and come the day of your wedding, hopefully you’ll feel more prepared and confident to get those show stopping photos you want!

YOU’LL BUILD MORE OF A RELATIONSHIP WITH YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER

This is a big one, because your wedding photographer is the one vendor you will spend the most time with. So it only makes sense that you get along with this person super well, right? Before your session even starts, I like to chat for a few minutes about you as a couple, what you like to do together, some of your wedding day visions and other things to help us connect and build a relationship. Instantly, it makes people feel a little more comfortable with me and gives me a better understanding of who you both are. It starts to feel more like some friends hanging out rather than an awkward photography session!

USE IT AS A CHANCE TO DO SOMETHING CREATIVE OR AN ACTIVITY THAT YOU LOVE

You don’t have to be photographed in a field at sunset dancing around in the long grass. As beautiful as that is, it’s not everyone’s vibe. What if instead, you book your session doing something you enjoy doing together; maybe you love going for pizza or coffee, you enjoy having picnics in the park or going bowling. Whatever it is, giving you something to do at your session will leave less time for empty space and more time having fun and enjoying time together.

Got an old car that you love going for Sunday drives in? Let’s do that! Decorate it with some cute flowers like we did for Harry and Brooklyn, crank your favourite tunes and you’ve got yourself a fun and unique engagement session that reflects something special about your relationship.

YOU’LL HAVE MORE PHOTOS TOGETHER THAT AREN’T JUST WEDDING PHOTOS

I’m sure you’ve got a bunch of iPhone selfies together, but professional photos hit different. A part of our job is to document people’s stories, so why not use this opportunity to document that pre-wedding chapter of your lives together? You can also use the photos for save the dates or your wedding website. And any excuse for more photos together is a good enough reason for me!
